Belize Coast Guard leadership transition 2026

The Belize Coast Guard has entered a new chapter with the appointment of its third commandant in its 20-year history.

Rear Admiral Elton Bennett officially handed over command after six years of dedicated service to Captain Gregory Soberanis, who was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral (Lower Half) during the ceremony.

The event was attended by Governor-General Dame Froyla Tzalam, Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño, senior government officials, and representatives from key national security ministries.

Prime Minister Briceño praised Rear Admiral Bennett’s exemplary leadership and expressed strong confidence in Rear Admiral Soberanis as he assumes responsibility for safeguarding Belize’s maritime domain.
