On the backdrop of increased Narco-Trafficking along the Belize – Mexico Border, the Commandant of the Belize Coast Guard Captain Elton Bennet visited the Headquarters of the 11th Naval Zone in Chetumal, Mexico. The Belize Coast Guard and the Mexican Navy share a long-standing special relationship that is founded on mutual respect and shared interest, “..and I have come to honour that tradition.” stated Captain Bennett during his visit.
During the visit Captain Bennett had the opportunity to discuss some of the main threats facing Belize’s northern border region in the Rio Hondo and adjacent Caribbean Sea. “Narco-Trafficking, particularly by air, is currently the main concern for the Ministry of National Security, and we are grateful for the continued support of the Mexican military.” Bennett said.
Commandant Bennett added that “Exchange of information and joint operations between the two services is essential in combating Narco-Trafficking. Traffickers take advantage of geographical gaps and exploit where there is a disconnect between adjacent states. It is therefore important for both the Mexican Navy and the Belize Coast Guard to continue their efforts in the war against drugs.”
